Current (Amps)

Power (kVA)

Phase

Level 1 - Primarily for Residential Use 120 12 1.44 Single 120V 20 Amp Grounded Outlet
Level 2 - Suitable for Commercial, Municipal &
Residential Use

Level 3
Strictly Commercial & Municipal Use Only
480 4001 192 Three Phase Three Phase 480V Grounded PowerOutlet

Level 1 (120 Volt AC) - Primarily for Residential Use Only
Level 1 uses a dedicated 120-volt, single phase separate circuit 20-Amp three prong grounded outlet. Although it depends greatly on the vehicle you are charging, it typically takes between 8 to 14 hours to fully charge a vehicle. The biggest disadvantage is the length of time it takes to recharge a vehicle. Level 1 chargers require a grounded 120 –Volt 20 Amp separate circuit to power the level 1 car charging station. Level 1 stations are not intended for stop and go charging, Due to the extended length of time required to re-charge. Level 1 should only be used for overnight parking situations.

Level 2 (208-220-230 Volt AC) - Commercial, Municipal & Residential Use
Level 2 increases the charge power by 5x and decreases the typical full charge time down to 4-8 hours, thus the main advantage for Level 2 Charging is speed. Level 2 charging is the most popular system used for commercial, municipal, as well as residential applications used by the general public, as it offers a quick recharge time – half the time of Level 1. Level 2 requires a dedicated 220-volt single phase grounded separate circuit to power the Level 2 charging station. This voltage is commonly found in most commercial buildings.

Level 3 (480 Volt AC) - Strictly Commercial & Municipal Use Only
Unlike Level 1 and 2 charging systems, Level 2 offers rapid charging, fully charging an electric car battery in 30 minutes or less. Level 3 charging systems are the perfect choice for stop and go charging. Level 3 charging stations are capable of charging multiple electric cars, all at the same time. Level 3 charging is the perfect choice for travelers that are on the go, not expected to be in one place too long - whether they are shopping, eating at a restaurant, or making a quick stop at a municipality - Level 3 is the way to go!
